Very pleasant lady with good bedside manner. She knew what she was talking about and I trust her to do her best for me.

Very good surgeon with an empathic manner. She listens and helps you understand the risks and benefits of any surgery. She is, from asking around, incredibly well respected by her colleagues. Great example of an NHS consultant.

We first met for a second opinion on a colon and colorectal cancer case. The tumours were a distance apart, and only the colorectal tumour had been intensively treated with chemoradiation. I knew that the colorectal tumour had slightly reduced, but that I had reached the limit of the oncology treatment I could stand. The 62 day referral deadline was imminent. Kathryn had just returned from holiday the day before so we had not had any contact. Her first question to me was, ,What do you want me to do?. To which I asked if she did miracles. She declined the offer but was prepared to discuss alternatives to the only other option I had been given. I worked in the rail industry for the last15 years, and was regularly required to address problems where hydraulic tubes had either broken or worn. I was not a disciple of repeatedly splicing these tubes, but rather replacing them in their entirety, so reducing weak points.I asked if the same principles could be applied to my surgery. We discussed the similarities, of human and hydraulic systems, after which we agreed the idea would be discussed at the next multi disciplinary team meeting, to obtain other medical professionals views. The plan was agreed and surgery planned. A very successful outcome was achieved in August 2018. Unfortunately on Christmas Day I became unwell and was readmitted to hospital with a blocked intestinal system. At the time of first surgery I had a temporary Ileoscopy the reversal of which, now had to be delayed. Things settled down, and by June 2019 I was ready for the reversal operation. It seems to have been success. Post operatively things were as promised very painful, but the trade off for me, is that I can now look realistically forward. I have already joined Macmillan and will be volunteering at my local hospital Without the hard work, skill and determination of all the people I have met through this journey/nightmare I may not have been writing this review. The most significant element has been Kathryn s honesty and humour, and as I told her last week, she is not only a very good surgeon, but also a very good friend

Miss Mccarthy has always given me the best care and attention, going out of her way to help in anyway possible. We have established a relationship over the many years of my complex health issues and she does her best to resolve those issues. She doesn't give up on me. Appointments for any follow up procedures arrive swiftly, as do her letters regarding my consultation. (Just for the record - although I eat few vegetables, I do eat plenty of fruit!)
